Helianthus is native to North America. Long cultivated by Native Americans for its edible seeds, it's now valued by gardeners for its colorful flower head and ability to attract birds. Leaves are generally alternate and have coarse, toothed margins. The terminal flower heads range from 3-12 inches in diameter with yellow ray flowers and tubular disc flowers which can be yellow, brown or purple. Sunflower can range from 2-8 feet tall.
